Meet the Team
Rev Helen Penfold
Our minister Helen took up her post in the Mid-Derbyshire circuit 9 years ago and currently looks after 5 churches in the Matlock Mission area these include: Matlock Moor, Tansley, Cromford , Holloway and of course Matlock Methodist and United Reformed Church.
Happy new year! I hope that 2021 will be a year of faith, hope and love for us all. A time when we can soon meet together face to face without fear of infection. A time when we can celebrate together and look forward to the things that we have so missed doing, like meeting with friends for coffee, like going where we like without the need for a mask, like a holiday!
For now however, I am sure you will have grieved like I did, when Derbyshire was put into tier 4 and we were given the ‘stay at home’ recommendation. Of course places of worship can remain open but we have been asked by our Methodist District and Rev. Robert Foster, our Superintendent, to close our buildings for face to face worship for January. This will enable us to keep safe and warm at home (I hope) and will reduce the risk of any possible infection.
This is a request not an order from our circuit, but most of the churches had already decided in any case to close for January before we were moved into tier 4. I am sure that you, like me, have been shocked and saddened to see the number of infections and deaths rise so steeply in recent days. I very much hope that we will all keep safe and well during these troubling times.
As before, we will use zoom each Sunday morning to connect with each other and scripts will be provided via email, for your use and so that those faithful people who have been printing and taking them round to those who are not on email, can continue to do so.
God bless you all

Church stewards are at the heart of our church.
Working as a team alongside the minister, they have responsibility for the full scope of the church's life and activities.
Church stewards work in a voluntary capacity, so their responsibilities are balanced alongside their personal commitments, family and social life.
Our dedicated church Stewards are Yvonne Brant, Penny Brown & Julie Dumelow, if you are new to the church and haven't yet met one of our stewards please introduce yourself to them.
Our Local Preachers and Worship Leaders
We have a number of local preachers and retired ministers who are members of our church who give up their free time to preach around the mid-Derbyshire circuit. The voluntary local preachers go through extensive training before taking up the role. Rev Juan Thompson, Rev Tony Wells, Sue Sunderland and trainee local preacher Rachel Barclay make part of the circuit team.
There is also a team of worship leaders that volunteer within the church, sometimes leading worship on their own and other times working in conjunction with visiting preachers. Worship leaders are trained volunteers who help to facilitate worship within a service but do not preach a message in the services they lead. Rachel Barclay, Tom Pilkington, Roanna Pilsbury, Mavis Salisbury and Elspeth Haynes (as part of our in house and travelling worship group 'Streams of Worship') are available when needed,
The Church Family
You can't talk about the team without mentioning the church family as a whole. There are more volunteers than it is sensible to name. When you look at our congregation we hope you see a welcoming Body of Christ each using their spiritual gifts for Christ. Some members form the Church Council making the big decisions and being accountable for how the church is run, you may also see the technical team, playing their part throughout and after the pandemic. You will see those that are part of the music group, those that lead Sunday school. You might not notice those that look after the up keep of the church or those that have dedicated their time to flower arrangements. You may be welcomed by a door steward or get chatting to a member of our mission and outreach team. Feel free to grab a coffee from one of our hospitality team. We hope you feel welcomed by our Church Family and we look forward to you joining in as a new team and family member.
It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
One Body with Many Parts
The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.
